PQC Announces Exciting Opportunity to Join World-Leading Research Team

The Produce Quality Centre (PQC) at the University of Greenwich’s Natural Resources Institute (NRI) has announced an exciting opportunity for a new Facility Manager to join its world‑leading team.

Based at the renowned Jim Mount Building within the East Malling Enterprise Centre, the PQC operates the UK’s largest fresh produce storage research facility  - a cornerstone of innovation for the nation’s fresh produce sector. NRI is internationally recognised for its award‑winning work in food, agriculture, the environment and sustainable livelihoods. Its expertise in research, teaching and consultancy has earned global respect, along with a prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Further and Higher Education.

The PQC plays a vital role in reducing food waste and maintaining produce quality during storage and transport. Over the past decade, its work has supported industry partners in areas such as controlled atmosphere storage, potato storage improvements, energy‑efficient cooling, novel postharvest technologies and sustainable packaging development. The facility also supports hands‑on learning and research for students on NRI’s postgraduate programmes.

The newly advertised Facility Manager role offers the chance to oversee a complex suite of refrigerated and controlled‑atmosphere storage systems. Key responsibilities include managing daily operations, ensuring precise environmental control, maintaining equipment, supporting research trials, and collaborating with scientists developing cutting‑edge solutions to reduce food loss.

This position requires a sharp eye for detail, strong problem‑solving abilities, and the confidence to respond swiftly to technical issues - making it an ideal opportunity for someone passionate about applied science, sustainability, and operational excellence.
