Establishing a centre of excellence for UK-based research on fresh produce quality

New project on cherry production and storage

The Produce Quality Centre (PQC) has launched a new collaborative project to improve the quality and storage life of Kent-grown cherries, working with industry partners across the supply chain.

The project brings together Norton Folgate Marketing, CE Murch, Storage Control Systems, TerraPrima Group and International Water Solutions, combining expertise from production through to postharvest handling.

Funded through the Growing Kent and Medway programme (UKRI), the research explores a range of approaches to enhance fruit quality and extend storage performance. These include the use of reflective mulches to improve crop development, respiratory monitoring to optimise harvest timing for storage, and novel decontamination technologies applied both in the field and within packhouse environments.

By integrating these approaches, the project aims to support more consistent fruit quality and improved storage outcomes for Kent-grown cherries.
